Facts About Waxing Hair Removal

Facts About Waxing Hair Removal

From preparation to aftercare, here are all the facts about waxing hair removal.

No woman is perfect, especially when it comes to body hair. Whether it’s an errant crop of sprouts sprinkled across the legs or an over-the-top assfro, feet that’d be more at home in the Shire or a field of unwanted follicles spanning the back, there isn’t a woman alive without a little extra stray hair. Luckily a quick tweeze will do the trick in most cases. But some scenarios, well, they call for bringing out the big guns.

We’re talking about waxing. Now, right off the bat, let’s get one thing straight: you should not be doing this at home. End of discussion. Just think about applying liquid wax to your skin and ripping it away: it’s pretty obvious how that can get dangerous if done improperly. You’re far better off leaving it to the pros, who can make the experience as safe, and painless, as possible. Before you go ahead an make an appointment, though, there are a few things you need to know.

How to Get Prepped

So, you’ve decided to go with hair removal. Good for you! But before you get this show on the road, there are a few necessary steps you need to take to make sure it’s, er, smooth sailing from here on out.

First off, let’s talk about hair. For the wax to grip the hair, there’s gotta be some length to it, so obviously, you’re going to want to not shave before the procedure. (That would defeat the whole purpose, after all.) However, you also don’t want follicles to be too long. We recommend is trimming any hair you can reach to between ½ and ¾”, just enough that the hair will stick to the wax.

Now, on to your skin. If you want to be sure you’ve done everything in your power to prepare your skin. Start by exfoliating your skin with exfoliating gloves, which has the added benefit of getting rid of any dead skin that could clog pores and cause ingrown hairs down the line. Follow that up with a touch of moisturizer, and your skin should be all set.

What to Expect

Ah, the big question: will it hurt? Well, to be honest, no, it will be virtually painless if you go to someone who is a specialist in waxing. Plus, it’s over pretty quickly. What’s thirty minutes of waxing hair removal compared to the weeks to come of smooth, hairless comfort? Not much, really.

Aside from physical pain, though, you’re probably wondering about awkwardness. We get it: even if it’s not your junk you’re having shorn, chances are that you’re going to find yourself in a compromising position or two over the course of the session. But just think of this as exactly what it is: a haircut, only not on your head. Keep up the small talk and the whole thing shouldn’t be any less pleasant than a trip to the hairdressers.

How to Treat Your Skin Afterwards

Now that you skin is clean and hair-free (for at least 4 weeks until your next appointment, that is), Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate! Washing and exfoliating your skin is the best way to prevent ugly bumps and stubborn ingrown hairs; before and after your wax. There are many ways to exfoliate but at Waxing Me Pretty, we feel that dry exfoliating works the best! Using a dry or slightly damp soft-bristled brush, gently move in a circular motion around the waxed area. This is a great and aggressive way to remove dead skin cells, rejuvenate and renew the skin. This should be done before your wax and two days following your wax, as your skin will be a little sensitive.

The women who invented the Brazilian wax

The women who invented the Brazilian wax

Waxing pubic hair has become increasingly common,

but how did the trend for the "Brazilian" wax begin?

In an office toilet in London, young women discuss their grooming regimes.

"I prefer the underneath being gone," says Lisa, 27. "Some people wax for the beach and other people wax for boys, and people who wax for boys wax the underneath."

Ever since Sex and the City tackled the subject, what women do with their pubic hair - trim, shave, pluck, wax or let it all hang out - has become a topic for discussion and scientific research.

Studies show that pubic hair grooming is becoming increasingly common. Earlier this year researchers reported in JAMA Dermatology that 84% of the American women who took part in their survey had done some grooming, with 62% removing all of their pubic hair. Younger women were much more likely to groom than the over-40s.

An earlier study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine linked the phenomenon to the availability of pornography. This same study suggested that the trend originated in South America - "hence the term Brazilian as slang for complete pubic hair removal".

But that is not the whole story.

"The Brazilian bikini wax was born here in New York, not Brazil," says Jonice Padilha, of the J Sisters salon in Manhattan, which pioneered the treatment in the early 1990s.

A Brazilian wax involves removing all the pubic hair from underneath and leaving some hair at the front for decorative purposes - perhaps a triangle, a thin "landing strip" or a heart-shape, that's up to the customer. "It's a freedom for you to have whatever you want," she says.

Jonice is the youngest of seven Brazilian sisters whose names all begin with J - the others are Jocely, Janea, Joyce, Juracy, Jussara and Judseia. They became known collectively as the J Sisters because nobody could get all the names right. Today the salon is popular with the rich and famous, and they make up to $6m a year on waxing, hair and nail treatments. But it had humble beginnings.

"It's an inspirational story of self-made women who came from nothing, illegal immigrants who made it in America," says Laura Malin, author of Wax and the City, a forthcoming book about the J Sisters. "It's the American dream."

The sisters come from the small coastal town of Vitoria, which lies between Rio and Bahia. They grew up in a large family - seven sisters and seven brothers - and in a traditional, macho culture. Their father forbade them from going out un - chaperoned, and was afraid it wasn't safe for them to work for other people, Jocely says.

But when he went bankrupt, his daughters began to bring in money by offering beauty treatments in their back yard. Eventually they became the main breadwinners, and ran three salons in the town. "After school I used to hang out in the salon, instead of going to friends' houses," says Jonice.

In such a traditional household, it seemed that the only way to leave home was to get married, but Jocely, the fourth sister, dreamed of seeing the world. She saved up and in 1982 went to New York to visit an old neighbour from Vitoria. She planned to stay for a month, but the few hundred dollars she had brought ran out in a matter of days. She faced a choice: fly home or start earning.

She could have been in trouble. "New York was a lot more violent then and many Brazilian women were prostitutes, so there was this prejudice," says Malin. Luckily, Jocely had skills.

She spoke no English, but found a job at a nail salon run by a Portuguese woman. At the time the fashion was for stick-on acrylic nails which would be removed weeks later, leaving quite a bit of damage. Jocely's focus was on restoring the nail's natural health and lustre. Her reputation for manicures spread and she attracted a powerful customer - Adnan Khashoggi. The arms-trade magnate would book her for the entire day, at a rate of $100 an hour, so he could have manicures between meetings. Through him she met many influential people, from stars such as Brooke Shields and Rod Stewart to the editors of fashion magazines like Elle and Marie Claire.

Soon she was earning well and, one by one, her sisters came over to join her. Jonice was the second to come to New York. She was dazzled. "It was when I arrived here that I realised Brazil was Third World," she says. "We knew nothing."

In 1987 the sisters opened their first nail salon on 57th St between 5th and 6th Avenue, then considered a fairly undesirable location. People thought they were crazy, says Jonice. At the time you didn't need a licence to run a nail salon so it was the obvious place to start, but they had other beauty secrets to impart. A few years later, at the start of the '90s, they began offering their - as yet unnamed - extreme bikini wax. It removed all pubic hair from below, not just at the sides.

Their signature wax had been invented by their sister Janea. "It's a funny story actually," says Malin. Back in the late '70s Janea was in Bahia with her husband, having a beer and some fried fish on the beach. She was admiring a beautiful girl, but as she walked past Janea was horrified by the pubic hair protruding from the back of her tiny bikini. "The image - it was like a mirror that shattered," says Malin.

Janea's next thought was: "Wow, do we have hair there?"

At home her suspicion was confirmed. But when she went to a salon to have it removed, she met with resistance: "Are you crazy? I'm not touching you there," was the response.

So Janea decided to do it herself. She locked herself in the waxing booth with a mirror and after about three hours of painful experimentation came out feeling fabulous. Then she convinced her co-workers to do the same. "They were like: 'Oh my god I don't feel ashamed when I'm in bed with men, I don't feel shame when I go to the doctor, I feel cleaner,'" explains Malin.

When they introduced it in New York, their bikini wax became wildly popular. It helped that they still counted the editors of fashion magazines among their customers. "Our only error was not to call it the J Sisters wax," says Jonice.

But there was a problem - they were coming under pressure from rivals. The early '90s had seen a boom in online porn, which increasingly featured hairless actors and models. "It's very practical for pornography but it's just very practical for sex," adult film-maker Anna Span told the BBC. Adult magazines such as Playboy and Penthouse also showed little or no pubic hair.

Jonice says Playboy called the salon, claiming they had come up with the idea first. "They said: 'This is ours, we do this for the porno site,'" she says. Jonice's defence was to say that it was just what everyone in Brazil did. "I said we were introducing our culture," she says.

"That's why all over the world it's known as a Brazilian. I played it that way so they would leave me alone. But it started here, not there."

People haven't forgotten that the J Sisters were the real pioneers. They were consulted for shows like Gossip Girl and Sex And the City.

"Sarah Jessica Parker came here all the time," says Jocely.

They count many celebrities as close friends.

"They have very intimate relationships with people," says Malin.

"If you spread your legs to a woman then you don't have anything else to hide. I've been there so many times and you end up talking about everything: depression, kids, anal sex... It's crazy and a little bit therapeutic."

As well as Malin's book, a biopic about the sisters is in production in Brazil - a "drama", or comic drama, say the producers. "They were very brave to leave this small town in Brazil and go to New York with no money and no English," says Karen Castanho, one of the producers. "They have such energy, I've never met anyone like them."

Hollywood wax or Brazilian wax for the first time can be quite daunting. Using the very best quality hot wax to give the most comfortable wax possible.

We promise the results are virtually painless and more than worth it! One Brazilian wax, Hollywood wax or Bikini wax and you will be hooked and you’ll never go back to any other waxing method!

Pre Waxing Care - Before you come in for your first wax, you want to make sure your hair is long enough. For ideal waxing conditions, hair should be between 1/4 inch and 3/4 inch long; about three weeks of hair growth from your last shave or four to six weeks of hair growth from your last wax. We require this length to ensure the best possible results! If the hair is too short, the wax will not be able to adhere and you will be left with stubble.

Post Waxing Care - Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate!

24 Hours Post Waxing - Avoid deodorant, hot showers, baths, chlorinated pools, gyms, exercise classes, solariums, self tan, spas and saunas as these can all irritate the skin.

Sun Exposure - Avoiding sun exposure 24 to 48 hours before & after your appointment is very important!

Waxing is not suitable - Retin-A or Roaaccutane users, sunburned or recently laser-peeled skin - Not suitable for women in the first trimester of Pregnancy [First 12 weeks of pregnancy] Women more than 12 weeks pregnant is absolutely ok to be waxed - Not suitable on recent scar tissue or nerve damage or increase / decrease sensitivity in the  area of the skin being waxed.

Scheduling - Waxing Me Pretty books all of our appointments with an additional fifteen minutes to accommodate parking, filling out appropriate forms and payment. For ideal waxing conditions, hair should be; approximately three weeks after your last shave and four to six weeks after your last wax. We highly recommend booking ahead to best accommodate your schedule.

Waxing Etiquette - Please arrive for your treatment clean and smelling gorgeous.

Appointment Requirement - Please do not bring any small children, friends, or any animals to the studio with you for your treatment. This is a health & safety insurance requirement, which must be adhered to or risk your appointment being cancelled.

Late Appointments - We will try our best to accommodate late appointments but if you are more than fifteen minutes late we will have to reschedule.

Cancellations - Please give 24-hour notice of your appointment. Should you fail to give 24 hours notice of cancellation you will be charged full treatment cost or the full treatment cost will be added to your account and will be payable before booking any further treatments. This is a cancellation policy we have had to implement to protect our appointments and our business, we hope you understand.

Waxing Myths

Waxing Myths

Myth: Waxing is a form of permanent hair removal

The effects of wax hair removal vary between individuals and is solely dependent on hair growth. People who have extremely sensitive hair germ cells will produce replacement hairs more quickly than others however, this particular form of hair removal can last between 3-8 weeks.

Myth: Side effects are temporary

Sure, the redness will die down in the hours following your appointment, but more serious side effects can last much longer. Too-hot wax can burn the skin, leading to blistering and permanent scars. To minimise the risk of permanent damage, leave it to the professionals instead of attempting at-home kits. And if the wax is too hot while you’re there, do speak up.

Myth: Timing doesn’t matter

You’ll be quick to call this false if you’ve ever gotten a wax during your period (ow!). The top two reasons to save waxing for pre- and post-that-time-of-the-month: reduced pain and no messy tampon strings to get in the way. While it is generally safe to get a bikini wax during your period, most women are more sensitive to pain around this time and therefore may want to avoid it. If just the thought of waxing makes you wince, try scheduling your appointment smack dab between periods. Studies report that your pain tolerance peaks during ovulation, which occurs mid-cycle.

Myth: You’re good to go right away

Your just-waxed bikini line creates a tempting smoothness, but stick with foreplay and put the real thing on pause for at least 24 hours after your waxing session. The friction and perspiration that result when you get hot and heavy can make the area more susceptible to infection, she says. That also means it’s best to fit a gym session in before your appointment instead of after. Waxing removes the hair from the hair follicle, and because the hair follicle is empty and open, it leaves more opportunity for dirt and bacteria to get into it. Leave the workouts and romp sessions for a day or so later, she says.

Myth: Waxing prevents ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs occur when the mouth of the hair follicle becomes blocked. This forces the hair to become trapped and as a result, begins to grow back on itself.

Although increased keratinisation can block the mouth of the follicle by producing more cells in the stratum corneum, inadequate aftercare such as dry skin and wearing tight fitting clothing over the treated area following wax depilation can easily produce ingrown hairs.

Myth: I will suffer an adverse skin reaction to the wax used

It is normal for skin to look slightly pink after wax epilation regardless of the temperature of wax used. Providing you do not suffer from hypersensitive skin, the procedure has been performed correctly there is no reason why you should suffer an over-reaction to waxing.

Myth: Waxing harms the skin

False! While waxing may cause some minor side effects such as inflammation and the dreaded ‘plucked chicken look’, these will disappear within hours. Waxing does not cause long-term damage to the skin – it even exfoliates and benefits the top layer of skin.

Myth: Hair has to be a certain length

The ideal length for hair to be waxed is between ¼” – ½”. Any shorter than this and the wax will struggle to grip and remove the hair.

Bikini wax: Everything You Need To Know Before Taking The Plunge

Bikini wax: Everything You Need To Know Before Taking The Plunge

Here is everything you need to know before booking a waxing appointment AT WAXING ME PRETTY CHELTENHAM.

We always recommend only going to a professional

Q: What prep should you do before getting a wax?

A: Nothing! No hair removal or trimming! We’ll take care of that for you. Just wear some comfortable underwear to put back on after the service for ultimate comfort.

Q: What is the most popular bikini wax?

A: Hollywood’s are the most requested wax of the four Intimate Services we offer. This popular wax removes all of the hair in the intimate area from front to back! But don’t worry everyone’s modesty is kept and protected. If removing all of the hair isn’t your cup of tea then choose from any of the other Intimate Waxing Services we offer; Bikini, G-String or Brazilian.

Q: How much will it hurt?

A: The more you wax the less painful the experience. The first wax isn’t everyone’s favourite, but once you’ve done it, it’s totally worth it and it’ll gets much easier. Waxing is a form of semi-permanent hair removal that removes the hair from the root meaning each removal weakens the hair growth cycle. Plus, at Waxing Me Pretty we recommend a Hot Wax rather than Strip Wax. Hot Wax coats the hairs being removed and doesn’t stick to the skin, meaning the removal is a lot softer and kinder on the skin and therefore less painful.

Q: How far in advance of a holiday should you get a wax?

A: A lot of people wax only a few days before going on their holiday, but if you’re not a regular waxer, then this can mean the hairs grow back quicker and that’s not something you want when you’re in your best bikini! We recommend seeing you for at least three Waxing Services before your holiday to ensure all of the hairs are growing at the same stage and removed at the best time! Depending on the speed of the hair growth, we’d suggest 3 months prior to your holiday.

Q: How often should you get a wax?

A: When you become a regular waxer, you can be hair free for 2-3 weeks on average. Then you need at least ½ cm in length for us to give you a Super Smooth Finish. If the hair is too long, the hair will detach itself form the root and another hair will start growing, so the results won’t last as long. Your Waxing Me Pretty Expert will be able to book your monthly follow up appointments to give you the best results for longer.

Q: Any big no-nos?

A: Don’t shave. I know it may sound like a given, but don’t feel like you need to tame any hairs, we’ll take care of everything for you. At Waxing Me Pretty we want you to have the best experience possible, so your modesty is our priority. You may find you are more heat and pain sensitive when it’s that certain time of the month, so we’d recommend for your comfort to book in when you’re back to feeling your normal self. If you’re headed for the sun/sunbed after your wax, give at least 24-48 hours. Heat on heat can cause redness and the skin to feel sore and can even burn.

Q: Anything else important we should know?

A: The first trimester of pregnancy is a no-no. At this time, you’re hyper sensitive and lots of hormonal changes are taking place! Get through those key 12 weeks and let’s get you booked straight in after.

Getting Your First Intimate Wax

Getting Your First Intimate Wax

Despite what “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” would have you believe, waxing isn’t the most painful beauty treatment.

Here’s everything you need to know to make your first time go smoothly.

Exfoliate Before You Go In - Before waxing, it’s helpful to exfoliate to rid the skin of dead cells and allow hairs to break through the surface.

You Can Get Waxed While on Your Period - But you’ll probably be more sensitive. Just make sure you use a tampon.

Know You’ll Be in Some Weird Positions - In my experience, each wax technician is different: Some prefer your legs in a diamond so they can switch between sides with each strip to minimise pain in a single area, and others prefer you assume an ostrich-like position (one leg bent, the other straight) so they can work their way inward, which can also minimise pain depending on where you’re sensitive. To access the butt, which also grows some hair, you may be asked to get on all fours, or you might be instructed to assume the Happy Baby position.

Lay Off the Razor - It’s not exactly a rumour that hair can grow back thicker when you shave. Over time, repeated waxing can weaken the hair follicles leading to finer hair. Waxing removes the hair at the root, so as the hair regrows it has a more natural, tapered shape, which leads to the hair feeling thinner. If you keep waxing, your pubic hair’s growth cycle will also begin to harmonize.
Don’t Shower for 24 Hours - Waxing leaves your hair follicle open, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria, so it’s best to wait 24–28 hours after waxing to shower. Skip the tight clothing, too—it can lead to more irritation, and worse, an ingrown.

It’ll Last About 3–4 Weeks - Depending on how quickly your hair grows, you can expect your wax to last about a month.

The ultimate guide to waxing your lady garden

The ultimate guide to waxing your lady garden

This is a bit of a weird fact, but it’s time to let you know that I am REALLY passionate about good bikini waxing.

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve ended up talking Bikini/Brazilian/Hollywood waxing with my girlfriends over a few drinks and I’ve been horrified with some of the stories they’ve come out with.

Last weekend was one, quite large, example of this – we were at a friend’s birthday party and the topic came around to summer holidays and fuzzy pubes and why bikini waxing was the devil.

Many of them have been permanently scared off of a lady wax due to uneven waxes with a distinctly wonky landing strip, horrific in-growing hairs post-wax and god forbid, actual bruises on their vagina. Now, as someone who is a regular lady wax customer, I’ve seen a few of these myself in years gone by and it’s virtually always down to bad waxing techniques and dodgy aftercare.

So after a long discussion with my friends this weekend. I thought it was high time to write up my top tips for picking a decent waxer, after care tips and why you should never, ever put wax strips near your lips (and no, not the ones on your face).

Bikini/Brazilian/Hollywood - how much hair do you want them to take? Have a think before you book your appointment as different waxes require different amounts of time and usually cost different amounts. A Bikini wax will just tidy up around the edges of your knicker line, a Brazilian goes much further, leaving just a landing strip down the centre and a Hollywood is an all-over balding (including your bum hole if there are any strays!). Can't believe I just said bum-hole on my blog. That's definitely a first.

Do some research - you wouldn't just rock up at a random hairdresser's and hope that they can work their magic on your hair, so it makes sense to do the same sort of research on a good waxer. Find one that you trust and stick to them like glue (or wax, ha ha). You want a salon that is clean, up on good techniques and that makes you feel comfortable. Ask your friends who they would recommend, look for blog reviews or check out the trusty Google ratings or Facebook reviews

Try not to be self-conscious - it can be a really weird experience baring your lady bits to a total stranger, but trust me, they see dozens of different ones every single day. If you're having anything other than the traditional bikini wax (which just tidies up the edges) you'll need to be naked on your bottom half for the best finish. Paper pants can give some sense of modesty, but to be honest, they usually just get in the way. Wear a longer top instead so you feel a bit more covered up and just try not to stress about it.

Hygiene - Technique and Hot Wax - a good salon/waxer will always always always use a fresh wooden stick every time they dip into the wax and throw it away afterwards. I'd also recommend avoiding the traditional wax and cotton strip approach for lady waxing. Instead, ask if the salon uses hot wax, which doesn't need any strips - it's normally less painful and produces less redness. Hot Wax is much thicker and is spread directly on to the skin, where it's left to cool. It then gets picked

off, pulling the hairs out with it. It doesn't grip your skin, so normally hurts a lot less and is great for any delicate areas. You also want to ensure you keep the skin taught in the areas you're having waxed to reduce the risk of potential bruising/more redness. The waxer should guide you through where to put your hands (if needed), but most of the time they are able to do this themselves.

Aftercare - looking after yourself post-wax is really important to help stop ingrowing hairs or any prolonged redness. Don't have your Brazilian wax the day before you go on holiday - try to give it at least 48 hours to calm down. The salon will normally smooth on some sort of cooling balm straight after you have a wax, if you can grab an extra sachet or two to take home, even better.  Don't wear really tight knickers for a few days after you wax and once you start getting to the 1-2 week mark, a VERY gentle exfoliation in that area can help to prevent those nasty ingrowing hairs.

So those are all my top tips for a successful lady wax. It's really not as scary as it can seem.

7 Things Your Bikini Waxer Wants You to Stop Doing

7 Things Your Bikini Waxer Wants You to Stop Doing

Even if you've done it a million times, going to get a intimate wax can be a harrowing experience.

Do you trim beforehand? Should you chitch at while they're doing it or just stare at the ceiling? So many questions! Because of all the unknowns that go along with getting a intimate wax, Cosmopolitan.com asked several waxing professionals what they wish their clients would stop doing before, during, and after waxing so you'll wonder no more.

1. Stop worrying about whether or not you shaved your legs or if you need a pedicure. Celia Anaya, 28, who has been waxing for eight years and works at Wax Addict San Francisco, says a lot of clients feel embarrassed about having not shaved their legs or having rough feet or something, but she says, "That's the last thing we notice. We're so used to seeing privates we're desensitized, just another day at the office! So relax, breathe, and take it like a woman!"

2. Don't think you have to cancel your appointment just because you have your period. Anaya says she'd rather have clients stay on their waxing schedule, even if they're on their period. She says that although your skin might be more sensitive to waxing during your period, plenty of people still come in anyway. She just recommends coming in with a fresh tampon.

3. Don't shave for a long time before you come in. Rachel Deikman, 33, who has been waxing for 10 years and also works at Wax Addict San Francisco, says that even though it may be inconvenient, you shouldn't shave for four to six weeks before you wax. Deikman says, "We know it's hard, but trust us, it's worth it. We can always trim if it's too long, there is not much we can do if it's too short." Shobha Tummala, Founder of Shobha, seconded this, saying, "We wish clients would stop shaving between bikini wax appointments ... [It] can throw off your waxing schedule and prevent you from getting the cleanest results from your wax. Also, uneven shaving can lead to stubble after waxing ... as some hairs may be too short for proper removal." Lindsey Blondin, 34, spa director for George the salon Chicago, recommends having about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of hair because otherwise, "the hair is too short and there's not enough leverage for the wax to grab it and pull it out."

4. Don't have sex right before you come in to get waxed. Ana Cristina Pitts, owner of The Brazilian Beeswax and a bikini waxer for over 20 years, says you shouldn't have sex before you come in for a wax and they can tell if you do. Pitts says if you do, "You are swollen and drippy! It won't affect the wax, but spare us please." TMI? Yes, but good to know.

5. Stop apologizing for your vagina. Annie Nicolette Hellmuth, 23, who has been waxing for three years and works at Garnet Lash Studio Monterey, hates it when women say sorry for something like how hairy they are. Hellmuth says, "Stop apologizing! It's my job to wax you."

6. Don't use your phone while it's happening. Hellmuth says she's actually had clients who have FaceTimed with their mom for moral support while she was waxing them and would prefer it if you, you know, didn't do that. You know, because rudeness and awkwardness.

7. Don't have sex, swim, or do any heavy exercise right after. Hellmuth says, "Your pores stay open for 24 hours after a wax and swimming, doing heavy exercise, or having sex could all allow bacteria to get directly into your pores. You want to treat freshly waxed skin as an open wound and keep it as clean as possible."

How To Make Waxing Painless

How To Make Waxing Painless

The tricks and tips to make waxing less uncomfortable

Of all the health and beauty appointments women make throughout the year, waxing is up there with the dentist.

Here is a guide to making your waxing experience as painless as possible, whether you're treating your arms, legs or bikini line.

Exfoliate and moisturise

Get into the routine of exfoliating your whole body. This removes the layer of dry, dead skin, which will not only make waxing less painful, but it also helps to prevent ingrown hairs. Don't forget to moisturise daily too, otherwise you will encourage the build up of dry skin.

Keep it regular

It might not be the most glamorous appointment you attend, but it's a simple fact that the more often you have a wax the easier and less painful it is. Your hair grows in cycles, so block booking your wax for every four-to-six weeks will ensure you stay hair-free for longer.

Time it wisely

Hair needs to be between one-eighth and one-fourth of an inch long to ensure the wax can grip it and leave you with a smooth finish. Too short and it won't take hold, too long and it'll take longer (and hurt more).

Just before and after your period your skin, particularly around the bikini area, can be much more sensitive. It's worth booking your wax for the middle of your cycle to ensure your pain threshold is at its highest.

Hot wax vs strip wax

Hot wax stiffens on the skin and is peeled off, whereas strip wax is removed with a piece of cloth. The former has a reputation for being less painful as it clings to the hair rather than your skin. Strip wax is better for removing finer hair though, so to ensure a long-lasting, smooth finish it's worth asking for a combination of the two.

Prep Your Skin for Summer

Prep Your Skin for Summer

Show off your skin with confidence this summer!

For gorgeous, smooth skin you'll feel ready to bare, you need to take a few simple steps.

Try this head-to-toe refresher to take your skin out of hibernation.

 1. Reveal Glowing Skin

Regular exfoliation can be a part of a healthy skin regimen no matter the season; as long as your skin is not sensitive, exfoliation can help you achieve smooth, healthy-looking skin that makes you look more glowing and youthful. “But it must be done with care,” says Doris Day, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. “The goal is to lift off the outer layer of skin cells that are ready to be sloughed off without stripping the skin.”

Brushes, polishing cloths, and scrubs offer easy ways to smooth away rough spots. Rotating cleansing brushes work by physically buffing off the dead skin cells. Exfoliating cloths, microdermabrasion kits, and scrubs with granular ingredients also operate the same way. “For the body, look for a scrub that contains coarse particles that dissolve over time, like sugar, so you don’t irritate the skin,” says Dr. Day.

Products that chemically exfoliate the skin contain ingredients such as glycolic, salicylic, or polyhydroxy acids that cause the skin to shed its outer layer and reveal the newer layer.

 2. Remove Hair Without Irritation

If your summer forecast calls for sunny days at the beach or poolside, you may be putting some effort into removing unwanted hair. But once you rip off the wax strip, it’s also important to care for the skin that’s newly exposed to the elements.

Give your skin some time to recover before rolling out your beach towel or getting active outdoors. “I advise clients to stay out of the sun or heat for at least 48 hours after any hair-removal process,” says Cindy Barshop, owner of Completely Bare spas. “Follicles are vulnerable to irritation, and skin may be sensitive due to any heat or friction from lasers, waxing, or shaving.”

Since most of us don’t plan our hair removal that far in advance, buffer your tender skin with an oil-free sunscreen, wait for it to dry (about 5 minutes), and dust on some talc-free baby powder, says Barshop. To prevent ingrown hairs, it’s helpful to wear loose-fitting clothing and use an after-waxing product that contains glycolic and salicylic acids, which team up to prevent dead skin cells from causing bothersome bumps.

3. Fight UV Rays With Food

All the work you put into making your skin look good won’t be worth it unless you guard it from the sun’s damaging rays, which are strongest during the summer. Surprisingly, you can protect yourself from the inside, too. “In addition to using sunscreen, eat cooked tomatoes every day if you know you’re going to be in the sun,” says Jessica Wu, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at USC Medical School. According to research, cooked tomatoes are rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that helps fight the effects of UV rays such as redness, swelling, and blistering from sunburn. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors, you may benefit from consuming tomato sauce, grilled tomatoes, or even Bloody Marys. “This doesn’t replace sunscreen, but the habit could give you additional protection if you can’t reach your back and miss a spot,” Dr. Wu adds.

4. Clear Up Body Breakouts

It’s no better to have acne on your body than on the face, especially in the heat, when hiding and covering up isn’t an option. The approach to treating acne on the back, chest, and elsewhere on the body is the same as treating facial acne: “Exfoliate regularly, don’t pick, and treat with effective ingredients,” says Day.

Washing with products that contain salicylic acid helps slough off the dead skin cells; a treatment product with micronized benzoyl peroxide can also help by penetrating the skin and killing off the bacteria that cause acne.

If your skin is sensitive, investing in an acne-treating blue light tool may be worth the cost. “You simply wave the light wand over skin for five minutes daily and it helps kill bacteria,” says Leslie Baumann, MD, a dermatologist in Miami. If you have severe body acne, see a dermatologist.

 5. Erase Cellulite

First, the good news: Some products may be able to smooth out the undesirable dimples and unevenness of cellulite. The bad news: They won’t get rid of cellulite forever. The smoothing and toning effect, like many good things in life, is fleeting. Still, it may be worth slathering on a toning body lotion to make your skin look and feel tighter for a day at the beach or a special event.

“Products that contain caffeine and theophylline temporarily dehydrate fat cells,” says Dr. Baumann. “However, it’s the massage and the application of the cream that does the work.” The best course of action long-term is to exercise regularly, coupled with targeted massage, suggests Baumann.

Another way to hide cellulite is to apply a fake tan. Take advantage of the newest self-tanners, which have come a long way from the strong-smelling streaky creams or sprays of yesteryear. “There has been so much progress in the formulations — the colors are natural, there’s no streaking, and the scent is so much better,” says Day.

 6. Treat Your Feet

If you’ve stuffed your feet inside boots all winter, they probably could use a little TLC for sandal weather. Jump-start your program with a salon pedicure, or if you’re short on time, you can heed Day’s DIY tip, which will help soften feet while you sleep. First, remove thicker skin with a foot file. Apply a rich emollient cream or ointment, then cover the feet in plastic wrap and cotton socks. Leave on overnight. Repeat every day until you achieve smooth skin, then once a week to maintain soft skin.
