What’s the difference between hot wax and strip wax?

What’s the difference between hot wax and strip wax?

The main difference between the two is that strip wax involves using disposable strips to remove the hair, where as with hot wax, the wax is left to harden and then directly taken off.

Strip wax - is what most people think of when you mention waxing. It’s runny wax that’s applied in a thin layer using a disposable wooden spatula stick. Hair is then immediately removed by rubbing a disposable strip over it and quickly pulling it off.

Hot wax - is typically thicker in the pot and is applied thickly too. Your therapist uses a disposable wooden spatula stick to apply it. Over the next minute or so, the wax will harden slightly. Once ready, the wax is pull away and wax off in one entire piece. Hot wax is for waxing sensitive areas or thicker hair. Which is why the wax of choice for intimate waxing - Bikini/Hollywood/Brazilian waxes, underarm wax and facial waxing too.

WELL, UNLIKE MOST BEAUTY SALONS WHICH COULD BE CONSIDERED JACKS OF ALL TRADES BUT MASTERS OF NONE, WAXING ME PRETTY Cheltenham WAXING THERAPISTS DEVOTE THEIR ENTIRE DAYS TO WAXING HAIR REMOVAL.

It’s my Body and I’ll Wax if I Want To

We recognise that for many of our clients, having unwanted hair on certain body points is an extremely sensitive and emotive issue. Therefore, while we like to have fun with our business and our branding where we can, we also take the issue of hair removal extremely seriously. We take pride in the sheer professionalism that all of our therapist show and the compassionate, non-judgmental approach every single one of them takes to waxing.

Why should you wax, you may well ask?

The answer to that is very simple. It’s your body and you can wax if you want to! You should never wax, on the other hand, because someone else (or society) expects you too. And we’re not going to tell you that having a wax is cleaner, more hygienic, or give you a list of any other reasons why you should have one, because we don’t believe in that stuff.

This means that if you want it absolutely all off, we’ll take it all off. If you want to keep it all on and just have a little tidy up round the sides, that’s cool with us too. If you like your legs hairy and your underarms smooth, we can do that, and if you’ve got no problem with your moustache but want an Hollywood / Brazilian, then that’s what we’ll happily provide. And you can rest assured that whatever you have (or haven’t got) going on down there – or anywhere else – and whatever shape, size, or type you are, no one at Waxing Me Pretty will ever judge, balk or be fazed.

All we want, when all is said and done, is to help make you feel good about yourself.

Choose a skilled waxer. All salons offer waxing but not all of them do it well. An intimate wax should not be intimidating or painful. Go to a therapist who has had specific training - shockingly most therapists have had no proper training in intimate waxing.

At Waxing Me pretty Cheltenham we are professionally trained in intimate waxing to industry standards. Recognised and accredited from BABTAC as award winning waxing experts in female body waxing and intimate waxing with qualification and certificates available.

You should not have to ask for thoroughness - experts do this everyday so just leave the intimate waxing to them.

Three questions you’ve always wanted to ask before an intimate wax.

Three questions you’ve always wanted to ask before an intimate wax.

Want to brave a Brazilian / Hollywood wax but not sure what to expect? We've asked the awkward questions for you...

Lying down on a bed in a salon, in front of a beautician you may have never met before, half naked – and anxious.

if it’s your first time getting your nether regions waxed, it’s even worse. But, it’d be a lot less awkward if you knew exactly what to expect.

1. Is it OK to get a wax when you’re on your period?

“Yes, you can have a vagina wax when you’re on your period."“But just a shout out to all the girls out there, please tell your therapist before she starts waxing – in case she pulls the tampon out.

2. Do I have to wash before a wax?

If you’re worried because you’ve been at work all day and you’re going straight to the salon afterwards, be aware that most should provide female intimate wipes on the bed when you arrive.

“If not, you could pack them in your bag just in case for yourself, “And it’s not because we think you’re smelly – it’s because everyone sweats.

“People shouldn’t be embarrassed to use the wipes to clean themselves. It’s not like you’re the only one I’ve left them for, it’s because I want everyone to have a clean vagina before I touch it. I also think people just feel more confident if they’ve cleaned beforehand.

The type of wax used is also important. “Always make sure your therapist is using hot wax, not warm wax, because hot wax hurts a lot less,” she says. “Hot wax is where its like actual wax that dries and then you flick it off. Warm wax is the wax where you use a strip.

3. How often should I get a wax?

“It depends on hair growth because everyone’s hair grows differently.” “But probably every four weeks.”

it’s true that the more you wax, the less painful it gets over time.

“It’s because your hair grows back sparser,” “So some of the hair follicles start to die off and it becomes less painful because there’s less hair, and it’s not as coarse. If you’ve been shaving, your hair will be coarse, but if you wax, it’s like a new hair growing so it’s fluffy and soft.”

And it’s important not to shave in between treatments. “If you’ve had a wax every four weeks for a year, and then you shave once, you go back to square one.

Guide To Intimate Waxing

Guide To Intimate Waxing

You don't need to be embarrassed, nervous or self-conscious when it comes to getting your bits stripped.

You do need to know what's what to get a safe and smooth wax.

1: Please prepare before you bare

To get the best results and to achieve silky soft skin, you need to prepare it pre-wax. Gently exfoliate and moisturise a week or two before your salon appointment as this will help the hairs break through, and be easier to be pulled out from the root. You don't need to use anything expensive, just a soft dry body brush or exfoliating scrub.

2: Shaving is the enemy

If you want to remain hair-free for as long as possible, you really should grow the hair for three to four weeks before getting waxed. That means NO shaving in between – if you don't let it grow long enough then not only will it really hurt when you're being waxed, but you won't get a smooth finish, and the hair will start to grow back before you know it.

3: Leave it to a pro or risk bruising

Don't try to wax yourself at home unless you've done it many times before, as you'll end up with bruised skin. By the time you pay out for the home waxing kits (and get wax all over the bedroom), it's really not worth it.

4: Choose a skilled waxer

ALL salons offer waxing but not all of them do it well. A intimate wax shouldn't be intimidating, but you'll want to find a therapist who's had specific training – shockingly most therapists have had no proper training in intimate waxing at all. You shouldn't have to ask for thoroughness – experts do this every day so just leave it all to them.

5: Only accept hot wax

Check that your salon uses only HOT wax on sensitive areas such as the bikini, underarms and face. Some salons will say they do and when you get there they use strip wax. Hot wax is a thick wax that they apply and then remove with just their hand. Strip wax is wonderful but shouldn't be used on the areas mentioned as it's not as gentle, and can leave you feeling sore. If they don't use hot wax on for bikini, Hollywood or Brazilian waxing then run for the hills.

6: Don't swim for 24 hours

If you've had a pre-holiday wax, keep up the moisturising while you're away as pool and seawater can be very drying. Follow your salon's aftercare advice and don't go swimming until 24hrs after your waxing to avoid infections.

7: Be VERY careful when sunbathing

Whatever you do, DO NOT expose the waxed body parts to the sun until 24-48 hours after your waxing as this sensitive skin will easily burn and you could be left with permanent pigmentation marks (dark brown patches). If you start to feel freshly waxed areas tingling when sunbathing then apply a higher SPF, this is especially important on the upper lip.

8: How to deal with ingrown hairs

Red lumps under the skin indicate ingrown hairs, which can happen as a result of poor aftercare, so practice gentle exfoliation as advised by your salon.

 10: Look behind you!

Remember that there are two sides to every story and in this case I'm talking about your backside. A good Hollywood / Brazilian wax should remove the hair from your buttocks AND the inside of your butt.

Bikini wax styles

Bikini wax styles

All the shapes and confusing waxing lingo, explained...

From a landing strip to au natural, our front fluff is a thing to be cherished. Here's how to have some fun with yours, if you fancy…

It's easy to get confused by all the different bikini wax styles and salon lingo. But don't worry, because we're making things so much simpler.

Now you can find out what all the names, shapes and techniques mean, plus you get to see 'em recreated in glittery sequin style.

1 Au natural - Before we get all waxy with ya, let's be clear, there is nada wrong with leaving things down there 100% au natural. There's no pressure to play around with your pubes if you don't want to, but if you do, these are some of the best styles and shapes to try...

2 Basic Bikini - Ideal for a first time waxer, the basic bikini line touch up is exactly as the name would suggest, a tidy up around the edges. A good option if you want to keep things on the natural side, but prefer a little more definition. Hair is removed from anywhere outside of a modest panty line - so around the tops of thighs and any hair above your knickers.

3 Extended bikini - Similarly to the above, the extended bikini wax is still nice 'n' natural, but with a little more of a neaten up around the top and sides of your pubes. This is usually referred to as a extended bikini line on most salon menus. You can keep your knickers on when you have this one done.

4 G String - A G string wax differs from other styles like a Brazilian as most of the hair is taken from around the front, sides and back, but the middle (labia) is left alone. If you want down there to be smooth and clean of hair, without feeling too bare, a g string wax is the way to go.

5 Brazilian wax - Brazilian waxes are one of the most popular options when it comes to primping ya pubes. Unlike the G string version, when you go Brazilian they take the hair off the top and sides of the bikini line, but also all the way under and around the back, too. (Yep, that means around your bum). If you want to feel totally smooth and hairless, go Brazilian. The shape of the hair at the front is totally up to you, but the landing strip is a classic option. Other popular shapes include a tiny triangle and a postage stamp, but feel free to ask for whatever style you prefer.

6 The Hollywood - The Hollywood. This leaves you with no hair, nothing, nada, zip, zero… catch our drift? So be prepared to take your knickers off and don't be embarrassed to get into some yoga-esque poses so your waxer can get everywhere, remember it's nothing they haven't seen before.

Facts About Waxing Hair Removal

Facts About Waxing Hair Removal

From preparation to aftercare, here are all the facts about waxing hair removal.

No woman is perfect, especially when it comes to body hair. Whether it’s an errant crop of sprouts sprinkled across the legs or an over-the-top assfro, feet that’d be more at home in the Shire or a field of unwanted follicles spanning the back, there isn’t a woman alive without a little extra stray hair. Luckily a quick tweeze will do the trick in most cases. But some scenarios, well, they call for bringing out the big guns.

We’re talking about waxing. Now, right off the bat, let’s get one thing straight: you should not be doing this at home. End of discussion. Just think about applying liquid wax to your skin and ripping it away: it’s pretty obvious how that can get dangerous if done improperly. You’re far better off leaving it to the pros, who can make the experience as safe, and painless, as possible. Before you go ahead an make an appointment, though, there are a few things you need to know.

How to Get Prepped

So, you’ve decided to go with hair removal. Good for you! But before you get this show on the road, there are a few necessary steps you need to take to make sure it’s, er, smooth sailing from here on out.

First off, let’s talk about hair. For the wax to grip the hair, there’s gotta be some length to it, so obviously, you’re going to want to not shave before the procedure. (That would defeat the whole purpose, after all.) However, you also don’t want follicles to be too long. We recommend is trimming any hair you can reach to between ½ and ¾”, just enough that the hair will stick to the wax.

Now, on to your skin. If you want to be sure you’ve done everything in your power to prepare your skin. Start by exfoliating your skin with exfoliating gloves, which has the added benefit of getting rid of any dead skin that could clog pores and cause ingrown hairs down the line. Follow that up with a touch of moisturizer, and your skin should be all set.

What to Expect

Ah, the big question: will it hurt? Well, to be honest, no, it will be virtually painless if you go to someone who is a specialist in waxing. Plus, it’s over pretty quickly. What’s thirty minutes of waxing hair removal compared to the weeks to come of smooth, hairless comfort? Not much, really.

Aside from physical pain, though, you’re probably wondering about awkwardness. We get it: even if it’s not your junk you’re having shorn, chances are that you’re going to find yourself in a compromising position or two over the course of the session. But just think of this as exactly what it is: a haircut, only not on your head. Keep up the small talk and the whole thing shouldn’t be any less pleasant than a trip to the hairdressers.

How to Treat Your Skin Afterwards

Now that you skin is clean and hair-free (for at least 4 weeks until your next appointment, that is), Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate! Washing and exfoliating your skin is the best way to prevent ugly bumps and stubborn ingrown hairs; before and after your wax. There are many ways to exfoliate but at Waxing Me Pretty, we feel that dry exfoliating works the best! Using a dry or slightly damp soft-bristled brush, gently move in a circular motion around the waxed area. This is a great and aggressive way to remove dead skin cells, rejuvenate and renew the skin. This should be done before your wax and two days following your wax, as your skin will be a little sensitive.

·      G String wax - Hair is removed from the top, high sides, and bum. [No visible pubic hair wearing G String]

·      Extended Bikini wax - Hair is removed from the two side panels going in narrow at the bottom.

·      Basic Bikini wax - A quick, gentle wax in the crease of leg.

We promise the results are virtually painless and more than worth it! One Brazilian wax, Hollywood wax or Bikini wax and you will be hooked and you’ll never go back to any other waxing method!

Pre Waxing Care - Before you come in for your first wax, you want to make sure your hair is long enough. For ideal waxing conditions, hair should be between 1/4 inch and 3/4 inch long; about three weeks of hair growth from your last shave or four to six weeks of hair growth from your last wax. We require this length to ensure the best possible results! If the hair is too short, the wax will not be able to adhere and you will be left with stubble.

Post Waxing Care - Exfoliate, exfoliate, and exfoliate!

24 Hours Post Waxing - Avoid deodorant, hot showers, baths, chlorinated pools, gyms, exercise classes, solariums, self tan, spas and saunas as these can all irritate the skin.

Sun Exposure - Avoiding sun exposure 24 to 48 hours before & after your appointment is very important!

Waxing is not suitable - Retin-A or Roaaccutane users, sunburned or recently laser-peeled skin - Not suitable for women in the first trimester of Pregnancy [First 12 weeks of pregnancy] Women more than 12 weeks pregnant is absolutely ok to be waxed - Not suitable on recent scar tissue or nerve damage or increase / decrease sensitivity in the  area of the skin being waxed.

Scheduling - Waxing Me Pretty books all of our appointments with an additional fifteen minutes to accommodate parking, filling out appropriate forms and payment. For ideal waxing conditions, hair should be; approximately three weeks after your last shave and four to six weeks after your last wax. We highly recommend booking ahead to best accommodate your schedule.

Waxing Etiquette - Please arrive for your treatment clean and smelling gorgeous.

Appointment Requirement - Please do not bring any small children, friends, or any animals to the studio with you for your treatment. This is a health & safety insurance requirement, which must be adhered to or risk your appointment being cancelled.

Late Appointments - We will try our best to accommodate late appointments but if you are more than fifteen minutes late we will have to reschedule.

Cancellations - Please give 24-hour notice of your appointment. Should you fail to give 24 hours notice of cancellation you will be charged full treatment cost or the full treatment cost will be added to your account and will be payable before booking any further treatments. Getting Your First Intimate Wax

Getting Your First Intimate Wax

Despite what “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” would have you believe, waxing isn’t the most painful beauty treatment.

Here’s everything you need to know to make your first time go smoothly.

Exfoliate Before You Go In - Before waxing, it’s helpful to exfoliate to rid the skin of dead cells and allow hairs to break through the surface.

You Can Get Waxed While on Your Period - But you’ll probably be more sensitive. Just make sure you use a tampon.

Know You’ll Be in Some Weird Positions - In my experience, each wax technician is different: Some prefer your legs in a diamond so they can switch between sides with each strip to minimise pain in a single area, and others prefer you assume an ostrich-like position (one leg bent, the other straight) so they can work their way inward, which can also minimise pain depending on where you’re sensitive. To access the butt, which also grows some hair, you may be asked to get on all fours, or you might be instructed to assume the Happy Baby position.

Lay Off the Razor - It’s not exactly a rumour that hair can grow back thicker when you shave. Over time, repeated waxing can weaken the hair follicles leading to finer hair. Waxing removes the hair at the root, so as the hair regrows it has a more natural, tapered shape, which leads to the hair feeling thinner. If you keep waxing, your pubic hair’s growth cycle will also begin to harmonize.
Don’t Shower for 24 Hours - Waxing leaves your hair follicle open, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria, so it’s best to wait 24–28 hours after waxing to shower. Skip the tight clothing, too—it can lead to more irritation, and worse, an ingrown.

It’ll Last About 3–4 Weeks - Depending on how quickly your hair grows, you can expect your wax to last about a month.

Going For Your First Brazilian Wax. What to Expect?

Going For Your First Brazilian Wax. What to Expect?

With bathing suit season fast approaching and the official start of spring.

I know some of you are thinking of heading to get your first ever Brazilian wax or Hollywood wax.

Here’s a rundown of what the process is like:

First, yes, you have to strip your lower half bare. While some places keep disposable undies on hand for regular bikini waxes, they just get in the way for a Brazilian wax or Hollywood wax.

Now, as to how much and where the hair will be removed. Some places call different styles different things, but basically you have 2 options:

1. Brazilian - Going for a little “landing strip” which means you have just a bit left right down the centre.

2. Hollywood - Going totally bare. It’s up to you. Just let your wax therapist know your preference upfront.

And that’s it! Total time: Anywhere from about 30 - 40 minutes.

Our speciality is Brazilian & Hollywood waxing. We use the only finest best quality hot wax. Trained by the best in the business. Having a Brazilian wax / Hollywood wax for the first time can be quite daunting, I promise the results are more than worth it! One Brazilian wax / Hollywood wax and you will be hooked.

So there you have it, If you have anything else at all that you’d like to ask us prior to your first time at Waxing Me Pretty, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch, either by calling us on 07544563471or by email: hello@waxingmeprettycheltenham.com Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you for your first wax very soon!

A Guide to Hollywood, Brazilian, & Bikini Waxing

A Guide to Hollywood, Brazilian, & Bikini Waxing

You’ve ‘Plucked’ up the courage, you read about it in glossy magazines, you’ve chatted with your girlfriends, and your partner is eagerly awaiting your new look.

But you leave the salon with the hair you wanted off still in your pants. Such poor service!!

I strongly feel that if a therapist has an issue with nudity they should not be advertising and taking bookings for intimate waxing such as a Hollywood. It’s a knickers off job. End of. In fact I’d prefer it if everyone just got their knickers off then they aren’t in the way and I can get a nice line on a basic bikini, but I accept not everyone is ok about nudity and if you want to preserve your modesty you’re fully entitled to.  However if it’s your therapist that is modest,

Here is very detailed description of what should be included in your service.

Hollywood Wax - When you have a Hollywood Wax ALL pubic hair should be removed From Front to back, inside out.  So that’s your butt crack, I do this with my client on all fours, it’s quick, requires no assistance from the client and gives easy access to the area to be waxed. It’s not embarrassing (ok maybe the first time) and over with quickly. I also include the Butt cheeks in a Hollywood or any wax where we wax the Butt crack, whether the entire butt is covered in hair or it’s patchy, it’s coming off and I’m not mentioning it or charging extra after all who wants to be told they have a hairy bum! This won’t be included in all Hollywood’s so read the menu of your therapist. The hair from the front is also removed and most importantly from underneath, There are plenty of Salons out there that will just take the hair outta your pubic mound and kick you out the door with your ‘Hollywood’ almost like being booted off the plane over the Atlantic!  How disappointing. The hair should be removed from the Inner and outer Labia, inner labia don’t grow hair it just grows inwards from the outer labia and it’s this hair that women tell me has been left by their therapists in the past.

Brazilian Wax - It’s exactly the same as a Hollywood only with a Landing strip, a neat little stripe is fashioned on your pubic mound once ALL hair has been removed from underneath to back and the labia.

Extended Bikini Wax - It’s just another inch waxed on the basic bikini, the crease of leg and a tad more, no bums in the air, no nudity-perfect for a day beside the seaside in a nice M&S one piece!

Basic Bikini Wax - The Crease of leg is waxed. That’s it.

If you’re a bit awkward about these things ask in advance what is included in your treatment, the last thing you want is to be on the bed with your bum in the air thinking ‘What in God’s name is happening’ or on the other end of the spectrum asking the therapist to wax your butt and having her flatly refuse as happened to one of my lovely clients before coming to me.

Happy waxing Girls!
